Clarity Act faces likely delay beyond Senate summer break deadline
Senate Majority Leader John Thune said leaders may still begin the bill’s Senate floor process before the recess, but election campaigning and other priorities are expected to compete for lawmakers’ time.
CoinDesk reports U.S. Senate Majority Leader John Thune warned that the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act, the proposed crypto market structure legislation, may not be able to finish by the hoped-for pre-summer break deadline.
Industry and congressional negotiators had targeted August 7 as the point when the bill would need to be done to have a reasonable chance of passage in 2026, but Thune said that window likely will be missed.
Thune indicated he would like to at least start the bill’s Senate floor process before the long summer recess, which could help preserve the legislation’s viability for a short period of floor time in September.
CoinDesk also notes that negotiations have been contentious after a final working draft emerged this week, including Democratic opposition over provisions that would limit senior government officials, and it adds that the next priority for Senate floor time is expected to be a bipartisan sanctions and tariffs package.
