FDA probe finds 72 cyclospora cases, Midwest infections center on lettuce
The FDA said the new outbreak is not tied to an identifiable product, while Taylor Farms lettuce linked to the cases has been recalled.
The US Food and Drug Administration said it is investigating another outbreak of cyclospora, the diarrhea-causing parasite, after disclosing 72 cases tied to an unknown source. The agency’s latest update, issued July 22, described a surge of infections centered in the Midwest.
Those cases were linked to Taylor Farms lettuce, and the company has recalled the implicated products. The FDA also said it is already looking into several other ongoing cyclospora outbreaks.
The renewed outbreak comes as cyclospora cases typically rise during the warmer summer months. The CDC has reported that thousands of people have been infected across 41 states so far this summer, according to the report.
The FDA said the latest outbreak has not been linked to a single identifiable product, but the news still pressured food retail and restaurant stocks. Insurance Journal reported Sweetgreen shares fell more than 13% and Chipotle Mexican Grill fell more than 4% to a session low, while Yum! Brands, whose Taco Bell chain was previously linked to the Taylor Farms cases, fell as much as 1.4%.
