Jes Staley testifies before House panel in Epstein ties probe
A transcript of the closed-door interview is expected later, and the panel has previously released materials from other witnesses including Bill and Hillary Clinton and Bill Gates.
Former Barclays CEO Jes Staley appeared before a US House committee in a closed-door interview tied to its investigation into convicted child sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, who died in prison in August 2019 while awaiting trial on child sex-trafficking charges, according to the Guardian Business.
The hearing follows Staley’s career timeline, including more than three decades at JPMorgan Chase before joining Barclays in 2015, and places him among other high-profile figures who have testified before the House committee on oversight and reform. A transcript of Staley’s interview is expected to be released at a later date.
The committee has already released transcripts or videos from previous witnesses, including Bill and Hillary Clinton and Bill Gates. It is also expected to release a transcript of its recent exchange with Goldman Sachs’ former top lawyer Kathyrn Ruemmler.
The Guardian Business also notes that UK regulators ended Staley’s role as Barclays CEO in 2021, after an investigation concluded his relationship with Epstein was close and went beyond a professional one. Barclays said the FCA concluded it was also misled by Staley, and that its internal investigation relied on information available at the time.
