Korbit joins Mirae Asset Group after affiliate takes controlling stake

Mirae Asset Consulting will hold a 97.1% stake, and Korbit says trading, deposits, and withdrawals will continue without interruption.

Korbit, South Korea's first homegrown cryptocurrency exchange founded in 2013, has become part of the Mirae Asset Group family after Mirae Asset Consulting, an affiliate of Mirae Asset Group, took a controlling interest, according to CoinDesk.

Korbit said Mirae Asset Consulting holds a 97.15% stake in Korbit, making the affiliate the exchange's largest shareholder. The update clarified that the acquisition does not change Korbit Co., Ltd., the corporate entity that operates the exchange.

For users, the exchange said there is no immediate disruption, with services including login, trading, deposits, and withdrawals continuing without interruption. CoinDesk also reports that user deposits and virtual assets will remain held separately from company assets under South Korea's Act on the Protection of Virtual Asset Users, and that personal data processing remains unchanged.

CoinDesk framed the move as part of a broader trend of traditional financial groups acquiring licensed crypto venues to expand their digital asset footprint, noting similar activity elsewhere in Asia.
