Thailand hunts suspects after attack kills five soldiers in Narathiwat
Authorities said about 10 attackers fired on soldiers at a checkpoint and injured six civilians, including a 10-year-old boy who remained hospitalized in stable condition.
Thai authorities said they are searching for people responsible for an attack in Thailand’s deep south that killed five soldiers and injured several civilians in Narathiwat province, according to reporting by the SCMP Economy outlet. The outlet said the assault happened on Wednesday evening when about 10 attackers opened fire and threw pipe bombs at soldiers at a security checkpoint near a residential area before fleeing. SCMP Economy reported that six civilians were injured, including a 10-year-old boy who was hospitalized in stable condition.
Officials cited by SCMP Economy said photos showed a group dressed in black clothing and hats riding on the back of a black pickup truck at around 6:45pm. The truck was later found abandoned and set on fire about 21 km from the scene.
SCMP Economy also reported that security officials said the attackers stole three AK-47 rifles, three bulletproof vests, and three mobile phones from the soldiers. Narathiwat, along with Yala and Pattani, is part of the southern region where a Muslim separatist insurgency has been active since 2004, with fighting continuing at a lower level.
