Claude Opus 5 beats Fable 5 on major benchmarks at half the price

Opus 5 costs $5 per million input tokens, and Decrypt says it is now the default on Claude Max and the strongest on Claude Pro.

Anthropic’s new Claude Opus 5 has been released as its everyday model, with pricing that undercuts its earlier Opus 4.8 level and undercuts the company’s Claude Fable 5 by half, according to Decrypt’s price breakdown.

Decrypt reports that Opus 5 costs $5 per million input tokens, outperforming Fable 5 on major benchmark tests. On Frontier-Bench v0.1, Opus 5 scored 43.3% versus Fable 5’s 33.7% and OpenAI’s GPT-5.6 Sol’s 34.4%. On ARC-AGI-3, Opus 5 posted 30.2% compared with GPT-5.6 Sol’s 7.8%.

The report says Opus 5 is now the default on Claude Max and positioned as the strongest model on Claude Pro, effectively replacing Fable 5 for most subscribers. Decrypt adds that the shift matters for customers after Fable 5 launched June 9, was pulled globally three days later following a U.S. emergency export control order tied to a jailbreak vulnerability, and later returned June 30 before moving to a credits-only model outside standard plans.

Decrypt also notes Lovable, a developer platform with millions of users, ran Opus 5 in internal evaluations and said the gains extend beyond benchmark scores, with an expected 22% improvement over Opus 4.7 and lower variance between runs, citing a statement shared by Anthropic.
