Netflix faces audience declines as binge model loses steam
An analysis cited by The Guardian found second season audience drops of 30% to 70% for top Netflix titles, underlining pressure to adjust its content strategy.
Netflix’s long-running binge model is facing strain as audience engagement on major titles appears to weaken after early seasons, according to an analysis cited by The Guardian Business.
The outlet notes that second season viewership declines for select top shows, including One Piece, Beef, The Night Agent and Avatar: The Last Airbender, ranged from 30% to 70%, with further declines showing up in third seasons.
The Guardian Business also highlights that Netflix has scaled back the frequency of certain viewership data, moving it to once a year after it scrapped quarterly reporting on subscriber growth last year, a change that has fueled concerns that its prior engagement-driven growth may be past its peak.
In addition, the article says research from Ampere indicates cancellation patterns across large streamers, with scripted programs typically ending after series two or three, while Netflix has announced the fate of about 180 unscripted and scripted shows annually over the past three years, with a reported cancellation rate averaging about 22%.
