US trade, tech and visa pressure on China seen as summit leverage

Chinese analysts said Washington is using restrictions to build leverage ahead of September’s Trump-Xi summit, while warning the approach could worsen summit atmosphere.

According to Chinese analysts cited by SCMP Economy, the United States recent wave of trade, technology and visa-related restrictions on China is being viewed as a deliberate attempt to build leverage ahead of a presidential summit in September between Donald Trump and Xi Jinping.

The outlet said the assessment is tied to efforts by both sides to establish a new framework of constructive strategic stability, following an agreement after the May summit in Beijing, even as friction continues to grow.

SCMP Economy reported that Washington is tightening exemptions for defense contractors procuring critical minerals from foreign adversaries, and that officials have also alleged Chinese firms are using US AI models to siphon intellectual property.

The article added that the US plans further restrictions on educational ties by expanding a Pentagon blacklist that would bar more Chinese universities from receiving American military research funding, while Chinese analysts warned aggressive pressure tactics could sour the political atmosphere ahead of the meeting.
