UK private-sector activity returns to expansion in July

The Flash Composite PMI rose to 52.1 from 49.3, with manufacturing output and services business activity both improving, easing near-term inflation pressure tied to lower oil prices.

UK private-sector activity in the United Kingdom returned to growth in July, according to a S&P Global Flash Composite PMI survey published via Action Forex. The Composite PMI rose to 52.1 from 49.3, the highest level in three months, marking the first expansion in overall business activity since April.

The survey showed manufacturing as the standout area. The Manufacturing Output Index climbed to 53.6 from 52.6, its highest in 22 months, while the Manufacturing PMI edged up to 52.8 from 52.5.

Services also returned to growth, with the Business Activity Index rising to 51.8 from 48.8. Action Forex noted this improvement was supported by warm weather, the FIFA World Cup, and stronger domestic tourism, though it said services growth remained relatively subdued as cost-of-living pressures continued to weigh on household spending.

S&P Global also pointed to easing input cost pressure as lower oil prices earlier in July moderated costs, which could reduce immediate pressure on the Bank of England to tighten policy further. However, inflation was still described as elevated due to the broader energy shock and supply constraints, while businesses continued to reduce headcount as higher costs weighed on hiring. Action Forex added that renewed Middle East instability and rising oil prices could still challenge both the inflation outlook and how durable the recovery is.
