UK retail sales rose unexpectedly in June on warm weather demand

June retail sales increased 1.0% month over month versus a -0.3% forecast, while non-store retailing volume jumped 4.4% on the month.

UK retail sales rose unexpectedly in June, with retailers pointing to sales promotions and warm weather that supported demand for outdoor items such as fans, according to Forexlive. Non-store retailing stood out, with volume rising 4.4% month over month.

The report also showed broader strength beyond discretionary categories. Non-food store sales climbed 1.2% on the month, and computer and telecoms retailers saw sales rise, with retailers attributing that to continued strong demand following product releases in March 2026.

Retailers additionally cited higher sales of clothing and sports merchandise as part of the June lift. Forexlive also noted a potential one-off factor tied to England performing well in the World Cup, while warning the bump may fade after the summer conditions and the tournament period pass.

Beyond the monthly data, Forexlive said the results help ease near-term fears of stagflation, even as the outlook could come back into focus later in the year.
