EU adds HTX to transaction ban tied to expanding Russia crackdown

The EU’s 21st sanctions package, adopted July 23, bars EU operators from transacting with HTX starting Aug. 23, without freezing HTX assets.

The European Union has sanctioned HTX and placed Huobi Global S.A., the entity behind the exchange, under a transaction ban as part of its expanding Russia-related crypto crackdown, according to CryptoSlate.

In the EU’s 21st sanctions package adopted July 23, EU operators will be prohibited from transacting with the exchange starting Aug. 23. The measures stop short of freezing HTX’s assets.

The EU action comes after Britain’s May designation of Huobi Global and related platforms, which triggered tighter scrutiny of HTX-related transfers at other major exchanges. In response, OKX warned customers who had conducted arbitrage between its platform and HTX that continued transfers could lead to additional account scrutiny.

CryptoSlate also reports that the UK action included an asset freeze and restrictions on making funds or economic resources available to Huobi Global, while indicating HTX was covered by the designation. Blockchain intelligence firm TRM Labs previously said HTX had rotated hot wallets and funding addresses across multiple networks in the weeks after the UK move, making fixed address screening harder.
