ICE officer’s vetting under internal review after deadly Maine shooting
The review follows questions about DHS’s rapid hiring and deployment of new ICE officers tied to Trump’s immigration crackdown.
South China Morning Post, citing a statement by U.S. President Donald Trump’s border tsar, said the vetting of an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer involved in the deadly shooting of a Colombian native in Maine is under internal review. Tom Homan said on CNN that several parts of the case were under review, including training and the specific vetting process handled by an internal affairs section. The officer named in the coverage is Army veteran David Brouillette, after relatives told the Associated Press that he had a history of serious mental health struggles and violent behavior.
The report also linked renewed scrutiny to questions about the Department of Homeland Security’s push to rapidly hire, train, and deploy thousands of new ICE officers as part of Trump’s immigration crackdown. SCMP said the issue came into focus after back-to-back fatal shootings of immigrants in Maine and Houston.
After the Maine shooting, Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin ordered a pause in vehicle stops, the outlet said. Trump then reversed course quickly, insisting the stops resume as a tool for rounding up and deporting immigrants without current legal status, and the outlet reported Homeland Security had not immediately responded to a request for comment on the internal review.
