Coinbase CEO says AI agents will boost crypto via Base and USDC
Armstrong said Base agentic payment activity surpassed 100 million transactions in June, framing programmable stablecoin payments as needed infrastructure for machine-to-machine payments.
Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong argued that artificial intelligence will not replace crypto, but instead increase demand for crypto-based financial services through what he calls agentic finance.
Armstrong said AI agents will need programmable money rather than traditional banking rails, pointing to Coinbase’s Base network, the USDC stablecoin, and the x402 payment protocol as key building blocks for autonomous machine-to-machine payments.
According to the article, agentic payment activity on Base topped 100 million transactions in June. Armstrong’s comments come as crypto firms increasingly describe blockchain networks as payment infrastructure for AI agents.
Coinbase launched Base in 2023 as an Ethereum layer-2 network aimed at making onchain applications faster and cheaper. Two years later, Coinbase introduced x402, a payment protocol built around the HTTP “402 Payment Required” standard to enable automated stablecoin payments between software applications, using USDC for transactions.
