Google indexing exposed sensitive Claude chats shared via public links
The issue stemmed from a missing noindex meta tag, allowing search engines to index share pages that should have been unlisted, and at least one report found wallet seed phrases among the data.
A Reddit user discovered on July 25 that a simple Google search for Claude share links returned hundreds of fully readable conversations from other people, according to Decrypt. The exposed chats included sensitive information such as crypto wallet credentials and apparent Social Security numbers, all shared through Anthropic's link-sharing feature for Claude. Decrypt reports that every shared Claude chat includes a label reading “Anyone with the link,” and while the share function is intended to work like an unlisted video, the “not findable through search” requirement depends on adding an HTML noindex meta tag. Anthropic had a robots.txt file in place, but Decrypt says Google could still index the pages because blocking a crawl does not prevent indexing if the URL appears elsewhere on the web. In the search results, the thread reportedly reached 4,000 upvotes and highlighted the breadth of what users shared, with Decrypt noting that somewhere in the indexed material were crypto wallet seed phrases, which can act as a master key to cryptocurrency accounts.
