Lido launches Curated Module v2 to consolidate Ethereum staking validators
The upgrade begins migrating 265,000 validators holding more than 8 million staked ETH, expected to reduce total validator count by about one-third and cut attestation message volume per epoch by roughly 29%.
Lido, the largest Ethereum staking protocol by total value locked, has launched Curated Module v2, a new version of its main staking module that changes how node operators secure the stake they manage. The protocol said the update requires professional node operators to back their managed stake with their own capital, beginning the migration of more than 265,000 validators holding over 8 million staked ETH.
The shift moves the validators onto Ethereum's high-balance validator design. Lido expects the consolidation to cut the network's total validator count from about 880,000 to roughly 628,000, a one-third reduction, and to trim attestation messages across the network by approximately 29% per epoch to ease load on the consensus layer.
Lido said all 34 node operators in the curated set are expected to complete the transition. The company described Curated Module v2 as the largest change to how Lido Core staking works since Lido V2 went live in May 2023, and said the upgrade also introduces a new bond framework for operators.
Under CMv2, each operator posts a bond denominated in ETH, stETH, or wstETH and held as stETH, with a single bond covering all of an operator's validators. The protocol outlined a penalty framework that can slash bonds to compensate stakers for events including validator slashing, diverted execution-layer rewards, or extended downtime, with penalties reported by a Curated Module Committee and enforced through DAO processes.
