China and Indonesia deepen nickel links despite resource nationalism

The ties are centered on nickel, an industrial metal used in stainless steel and increasingly in advanced batteries, according to SCMP Economy.

SCMP Economy reports that China and Indonesia are building deeper trade and industrial links through Chinese firms seeking Indonesian nickel, a key industrial metal for stainless steel and, increasingly, advanced batteries.

The outlet says a Wenzhou, China-based private company that began pursuing nickel access around 2009 used Indonesia’s nickel reserves to support its growth, as China’s and Southeast Asia’s economic integration accelerated.

SCMP Economy adds that Zhao Xijun, a finance professor at Renmin University of China, described the relationship as one where Indonesia provides the resources while China brings capital, technology and manufacturing expertise, creating a more integrated industrial ecosystem.

The article frames the trend as part of a broader shift in which more Chinese enterprises help connect China’s manufacturing strengths with Southeast Asia’s resource base, even as concerns about resource nationalism emerge.
