Elon Musk warns AI could outpace humans within a decade
Musk urged leading AI developers to coordinate on safety, including regular reviews of frontier models and limited early access for rivals.
Elon Musk said advanced artificial intelligence is advancing too quickly for humans to remain in control within the next decade, arguing AI is on track to outperform people at nearly every intellectual task, according to Decrypt. Speaking with The Economist editor in chief Zanny Minton Beddoes on Thursday, the xAI founder also said AI could surpass the combined intelligence of humanity in about five years.
Musk said he no longer sees a realistic path to slowing AI development, warning that even if a stop button existed, pressing it might not be advisable because he expects an era of “amazing abundance.” He added that he still views advanced AI as posing existential risks, but that the momentum of AI and robots is difficult to halt.
To address safety concerns, Musk proposed that the world’s leading AI companies hold regular meetings focused on safety and security before releasing their most powerful models. He also suggested that competing AI labs receive limited early access to each other’s frontier models so they can identify dangerous capabilities before public release.
Musk said governments could intervene if a company fails to address serious risks. He also criticized Sam Altman and OpenAI’s shift from a nonprofit originally intended as an open source AI effort into a closed source for profit company, describing it as having grown into an $800 billion enterprise.
