Hong Kong pledges more help for premium taxi fleets amid driver gap

Officials said the five premium taxi fleets had about 2,400 drivers in service, while the fleet count remained roughly 1,000 vehicles short of the 3,500 target.

Hong Kong’s transport chief said the government will step up efforts to help premium taxi fleets recruit drivers after acknowledging the supply of vehicles remains below the program’s target a year after launch, according to SCMP Economy.

The city said the five fleets operating premium service, SynCab, Big Boss Taxi, Amigo, Big Bee Taxi and Joie, had more than 2,000 fleet taxis and about 2,400 drivers in service. Commissioner for Transport Winnie Tse Wing-yee said operators must “step up their efforts” to attract new recruits, even as the government continues promoting fleet development.

SCMP Economy reported that by the end of May, the fleets had completed about 4.2 million trips in total. However, the number of fleet taxis still fell short of the government’s target of 3,500 vehicles.
