Malaysia Blockchain Week drops influencer from afterparty amid backlash

Organizers made the change after Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation withdrew support and asked for removal of agency branding and materials tied to the party.

Malaysia Blockchain Week said it has dropped Siew Pui Yi, known publicly for adult-content work, from performing as the headline DJ at the MYBW26 official afterparty on Thursday night, following a public backlash.

According to SCMP Economy, the organizers said the DJ lineup changed after an update to event arrangements, adding that Ms Pui Yi will no longer be performing as the headline DJ.

The decision came after Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation, or MDEC, said it withdrew its support for the event and ordered organizers to remove materials bearing the agency’s name, logo, or image, the outlet said. The move also involved the Ministry of Digital and Minister Gobind Singh Deo, SCMP Economy reported.

SCMP Economy added that MDEC and the ministry said they were not involved in planning or promoting the party, including choosing its guests. The episode underscores the cultural scrutiny that can affect Malaysia’s efforts to market itself as a regional technology and crypto hub.
