Amazon deprecates most Nova AI models, shifts toward frontier model
The company plans to debut its new flagship frontier-model effort at its re:Invent conference later this year, according to Business Insider.
Amazon.com is revamping its AI strategy, winding down many of its in-house flagship Nova models and redirecting more resources to a new frontier-model effort, Business Insider reported Tuesday, citing people familiar with the matter.
The company has begun deprecating most Nova models, including Premier and Omni, along with its Reel video-generation and Canvas image-generation models, while frontier research is set as a top priority this year and is led by researcher Pieter Abbeel.
Business Insider also said the new flagship model is expected to debut at Amazon's re:Invent annual conference later this year. An Amazon spokesperson told Reuters that the company continually evolves its model lineup based on customer needs, adding it will keep investing in the Nova models customers rely on while funding next-generation frontier research.
The shift comes days after Amazon trimmed jobs in its artificial general intelligence group, with the company saying it was sharpening focus on initiatives it considers most important for customers. Amazon has also faced difficulty generating market buzz around Nova models compared with rivals including OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google.
