Orion development will add nearly 1,000 homes in Long Island City
About 658 units will be income-restricted for extremely low- to moderate-income households, and the project also includes supportive apartments and ground-floor retail.
Commercial Observer reports that a development team comprising Slate Property Group, Hudson Companies, and Volunteers of America has been selected to build nearly 1,000 homes on a vacant parcel at 54-42 Second Street in Long Island City, Queens.
The planned 70,000-square-foot project, called The Orion, will add approximately 980 new apartments. Two-thirds of the units, about 658 apartments, will be income-restricted as affordable housing, with roughly 150 units designated as supportive apartments.
The Orion is being developed as part of the larger 30-acre Hunter’s Point South housing complex, where the city expects about 5,000 new homes total, roughly 3,000 of them affordable when complete. The city’s Department of Housing Preservation and Development began courting developers for Parcel E in June of the prior year, and the request for proposals required more affordable units than earlier phases.
The mixed-use community is designed by Marvel Architects and is set to include an affordable child care center, a workforce development center, a community pool, and about 6,000 square feet of ground-floor commercial retail space along Second Street and Center Boulevard. Commercial Observer also notes Parcel E will be the sixth of seven parcels planned for Hunter’s Point South.
