Republic National Distributing files for Chapter 11 after revenue slump
The distributor cited a post-Covid drop in off-premises alcohol demand, excess pandemic inventory, and pressure from high interest rates and inflation.
Republic National Distributing Company, a 128-year-old beer, wine, and spirits distributor, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, according to Yahoo Finance. The company said it is seeking going-concern sales of remaining assets, a wind down of operations, completion of transition services agreements, and court approval of an equity holder settlement.
The bankruptcy filing points to a downturn in public alcohol consumption that hurt revenue in the beer, wine, and spirits sectors. Republic National Distributing said its financial position deteriorated after the Covid-19 pandemic subsided in late 2022, when demand for off-premises alcohol consumption fell sharply.
Court papers cited an unexpected shift in consumer drinking patterns, including some adults curtailing alcohol or stopping altogether. The material also states that from 2022 onward, alcohol consumption dropped, with the share of U.S. adults reporting themselves as regular consumers reaching the lowest level in nearly 90 years.
Yahoo Finance also reported that macroeconomic and industry headwinds, including high interest rates and rising inflation, added to the pressure. The article notes distributors faced excess inventory after accumulating significant alcohol product during the pandemic, and it cites spirits supplier sales falling 2.2% to $36.4 billion in 2025.
