Zcash completes formal proof for Ironwood shielded pool security
The verification, published in Lean, covers more than 2,700 theorems and targets balance integrity so the shielded pool cannot pay out more than has entered under stated assumptions.
Zcash says it has completed formal verification of Ironwood, publishing a machine checked proof intended to rule out undetectable counterfeiting bugs in the network’s new shielded pool. The work is designed to establish a security property called balance integrity, aimed at ensuring the pool cannot pay out more value than has publicly entered under its stated cryptographic assumptions.
Cointelegraph reports that Project Tachyon said the proof is written in the Lean programming language, includes over 2,700 theorems, and took three teams of researchers and cryptographers more than a month to complete. The published proof covers components needed for the balance integrity property, including Ironwood’s zero knowledge proof system, circuit rules, and ledger level accounting, while not covering Ironwood’s separate privacy guarantees.
Ironwood was introduced with Zcash’s NU6.3 upgrade after a vulnerability was discovered in its Orchard shielded pool that could theoretically have enabled undetectable ZEC counterfeiting. Zcash developers said they found no evidence the flaw was exploited, and the new pool was built to restore confidence in Zcash supply integrity.
As funds migrate from Orchard, Cointelegraph notes they must pass through a public accounting checkpoint called a turnstile, designed to prevent any hypothetical excess coins from entering Ironwood. As funds leave Orchard, the process could also provide growing evidence about whether the old pool was exploited.
