CMS will end Medicare Part D premium stabilization after 2026

CMS says the national average monthly Part D bid will be $296.05, and standalone drug plans are expected to move back to traditional pricing in 2027.

HousingWire reports that the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services will end the Medicare Part D Premium Stabilization Demonstration after the 2026 contract year, with standalone prescription drug plans returning to traditional market conditions in 2027.

CMS said it will conclude the voluntary program because insurers now have sufficient experience under the updated Part D benefit structure to develop bids without additional support. The change was announced alongside preliminary technical Medicare Part D bid information for the 2027 contract year.

HousingWire also notes CMS set the national average monthly bid at $296.05, with a base premium of $41.33. The Inflation Reduction Act protects beneficiaries by capping annual premium increases at 6% through 2029.

In remarks shared by CMS Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz, the agency said beneficiaries will continue to have access to affordable prescription drug coverage, and most enrollees are expected to see monthly premium increases of less than $10, while some plans could cost even less than today. HousingWire ties the potential change in Medicare-related costs to retirement household budgets and notes that higher health and living expenses can affect overall financial planning decisions.
