Mastercard CEO says credit cards will prevail in AI shopping era

Mastercard is framing its role around “agentic commerce,” aiming to keep card payments central as AI-driven buying spreads.

Mastercard is positioning itself for what it calls the shift toward “agentic commerce,” as payment technology evolves alongside AI shopping, according to MarketWatch.

In an interview, Mastercard’s CEO argued that credit and payment cards will still have a place in the new purchasing environment, saying the company expects them to “prevail,” MarketWatch reported.

The company’s focus, as described by MarketWatch, is on adapting to how transactions may be initiated or carried out in an AI-influenced commerce setting while keeping the payments network relevant.
