Telegram faces Australia legal action over alleged terror content failures
Australian regulators are seeking a potential fine of up to $38 million under the Online Safety Act.
Australia’s Safety Commissioner has initiated legal action against the messaging app Telegram, alleging it failed to remove terror-related content, a step that could expose the platform to a fine of up to $38 million under the country’s Online Safety Act, according to CoinDesk.
The case targets materials linked to extremist attacks, including video from the March 2019 Christchurch, New Zealand mosque shooting that killed 51 people, with regulators arguing Telegram did not meet its obligations to address the content.
Telegram, which the outlet notes is home to many crypto-related discussion groups and other community features, denies the allegations and says it will contest the matter in court, while pointing to its stated anti-terrorism efforts.
The development follows separate terrorism-related charges in Russia against Telegram founder Pavel Durov, tied to allegations that the platform enabled recruitment by Ukrainian secret services, CoinDesk reported.
