Aon warns July severe weather could rank among costliest US events
Aon estimates the Midwest and eastern storm outbreak may drive total economic and insured losses in the low-to-mid single-digit billions, with damage tied to an EF-3 tornado and widespread wind, hail, and power outages.
Aon said its latest Weekly Cat report warns a large severe weather outbreak in July could land near, or among, the top 10 costliest severe weather events in U.S. history. The broker expects total economic and insured losses in the low-to-mid single-digit billions of dollars, attributing damage to extensive wind, hail, and tornadoes across the Midwest, followed by additional storms impacting parts of the eastern U.S.
In Wisconsin and northern Illinois, Aon highlighted a devastating EF-3 tornado that struck the Fox Cities region, while the Chicagoland metro faced very intense wind and hail. The report cites extensive property and infrastructure damage, with hundreds of thousands of power outages.
Aon placed most of the impacts on July 27-28, including hurricane-force wind gusts and hail larger than 2 inches across multiple Chicago-area counties, as well as localized flooding after more than 76 mm of rain fell in a few hours. It also references NWS damage surveys confirming seven tornadoes in northern Illinois, including two EF-1 twisters in the southern Chicago suburbs.
