ECB’s Kocher says policy will stay data-dependent amid inflation risks

Kocher linked policy timing in autumn to incoming data needed to return euro area inflation to 2% sustainably, while EUR/USD was last around 1.1517 and down 0.1% on the day.

ECB Governing Council member Martin Kocher said the ECB will keep making decisions based on incoming data, emphasizing that geopolitical developments can quickly shift energy prices and alter the euro area inflation outlook, according to FXStreet.

Kocher said that in autumn the ECB governing council will make decisions to bring euro area inflation back to its 2% target on a sustainable basis, signaling a wait-and-see approach rather than immediate action.

At the time of FXStreet’s update, EUR/USD was trading about 0.1% lower near 1.1517 after Kocher’s remarks, with the piece noting no immediate reaction in the euro pair following the speech.

FXStreet also pointed to broader inflation and risk factors in markets, including stronger-than-expected euro zone HICP data supporting EUR/USD and safer-haven demand for the US dollar during heightened geopolitical concerns.
