FAA certification clears DoorDash Air to launch drone deliveries
The approval grants DoorDash Part 135 air carrier certification, making DoorDash the eighth U.S. operator for commercial drone delivery and lifting shares after recent gains.
DoorDash shares rose on Wednesday after the Federal Aviation Administration granted the company Part 135 air carrier certification, clearing the way for it to officially launch DoorDash Air, its in house drone delivery service developed by DoorDash Labs. Yahoo Finance reports the approval comes as DASH has already been trending higher, gaining more than 15% in recent sessions.
The FAA certification places DoorDash among the eighth set of operators authorized to commercially fly delivery drones in the U.S., joining companies that include Alphabet’s Wing and Amazon’s Prime Air. DoorDash Air will use custom designed drones built internally rather than relying entirely on third party partners, which the company has positioned as a way to improve margins.
The report also notes the potential cost dynamics around delivery operations, saying mid range deliveries can take human drivers up to 25% longer to dispatch, which can affect profit margins and driver availability. Ahead of DoorDash’s Q2 earnings on Aug. 5, the article flags consensus expectations of $0.50 per share, which would be a 23% decline year over year.
Wall Street’s stance heading into the quarter remains upbeat in the piece, citing Barchart’s consensus rating of “Strong Buy” and a mean price target of nearly $245, implying potential upside of about 23% in the second half of 2026. The article adds that the stock has closed both August and September in the green, pointing to a seasonal pattern.
