IBM CEO says quantum computing could start contributing by 2028 or 2029
IBM expects quantum computing to affect its revenue and profit by 2028 or 2029, while Krishna also tied the long run to a trillion-dollar value view.
IBM CEO Arvind Krishna said quantum computing is nearing a commercial milestone, expecting the technology to begin generating a measurable contribution to the company’s revenue and profit by 2028 or 2029. Krishna made the comments during an interview on CNBC’s Mad Money on Thursday, according to CoinDesk.
CoinDesk reports that Krishna framed quantum as shifting from long term research toward a real business, with the competition among hardware and software developers intensifying as companies race to solve types of problems that conventional computers struggle with.
IBM, Alphabet, IonQ and Rigetti are among the players working on machines that use quantum principles to target specific challenges, CoinDesk added. The outlet noted that the crypto industry is also watching quantum’s infrastructure needs and potential security implications.
Krishna also said he expects broader economic value from the sector over the longer term, describing what he sees as trillion dollar potential by the end of the 2030s, CoinDesk reported.
