JPMorgan shares fall nearly 3% after Fed holds rates steady
The drop reflects investor expectations that unchanged policy offers no near term boost to banks' interest income, even as the Fed is still seen facing possible future hikes.
JPMorgan Chase shares slid almost 3% during Wednesday trading after the Federal Reserve’s Open Market Committee voted to keep its key interest rates unchanged, according to Yahoo Finance.
The outlet said investors interpreted the decision as limiting any immediate boost to banks’ interest income, because higher rates typically widen the spread between what lenders earn on loans and what they pay on deposits.
Yahoo Finance also pointed to context behind the move, noting that expectations for the Fed decision were already largely in place and that inflation risks remain a headwind for the broader U.S. and global economies.
The article added that JPMorgan’s stock did not drop further on the decision, supported by its prior run-up, recent quarterly results described as strong, and its performance in this year’s Federal Reserve annual stress tests.
