Mars Wrigley factory redevelopment in Galewood stalls amid disputes
The former Mars Wrigley factory, closed since 2024, is planned for about 500 housing units, but Ald. Chris Taliaferro paused meetings until the community input process is revamped.
Plans to redevelop the shuttered Mars Wrigley factory at 2019 N. Oak Park Ave. in Galewood have stalled after contentious public meetings, according to Bisnow.
The developer, McCaffery Interests, has proposed converting the building and building roughly 500 housing units, plus a community center, parks, and retail space. However, neighbors have opposed the concept as presented, prompting 29th Ward Alderman Chris Taliaferro to pause future meetings until the community input process is revamped.
The Galewood-Montclare Community Organization has proposed an alternative plan that would reduce or remove the housing component in favor of a new public library, grocery store, and a 1,000-spot parking lot. Taliaferro said both residents and the developer have agreed to move discussions to smaller, focused meetings led by a facilitator that reviews feedback and aims to set a timeline.
Beyond the Chicago redevelopment, Mars said it will close its hub in Newark, New Jersey by the end of 2027 and expects to eliminate 307 positions, with job cuts effective mid-October. Bisnow also notes Mars is advancing a separate expansion plan for Mars Snacking in Chicago, adding 600 jobs and investing $100M, according to previously disclosed company plans.
