Singapore plans to clear part of Maju forest for public housing
Housing Development Board plans call for clearing about 15 hectares of the Maju forest out of 23 hectares to make way for housing projects in coming years.
Singapore’s Housing Development Board, or HDB, has announced plans to clear about 15 of 23 hectares of the Maju forest in the coming years to build public housing, according to a report by SCMP Economy.
Residents who live near the Sunset Way area say the forest has long shaped the character of their homes and community, and they are pressing for more transparency in how the plans are developed. Kolette Lim, published July 31, 2026, noted that residents liken the forest to a nearby “living neighbour.”
One resident, media producer Jo Teoh, said she has spent more than three decades enjoying the forest’s wildlife and surroundings, and described the proposed clearing as reducing a lived environment shown on planning materials. Another resident, educator Anna Ng, said she moved to Sunset Way about two decades ago so her children could grow up near nature, including bike rides and access to the forest when they were younger.
