Americans grow more skeptical of AI, Gallup finds
Gallup reported 39% of Americans say AI does more harm than good, up from 31% in 2025, alongside declining trust in businesses using AI responsibly.
Gallup said Americans have cooled toward artificial intelligence after two years of improving attitudes, with more people reporting concerns about harm, jobs, and business responsibility. In the poll, seven in 10 Americans said they are somewhat or extremely knowledgeable about AI, rising from 64% in 2024, but skepticism has increased as familiarity has grown.
More respondents now believe AI does more harm than good, with 39% saying that outcome, up from 31% in 2025. Gallup also found only 9% think AI does more good than harm, while 52% believe it produces equal amounts of harm and good.
The survey pointed to job fears as well. Nearly eight in 10 Americans said AI will reduce the number of U.S. jobs over the next decade, increasing to 79% from 73% in 2025, with the biggest rise among adults ages 18 to 29.
Trust in companies to use AI responsibly declined, particularly for younger adults, Decrypt reported. Gallup found 27% of Americans trust businesses at least somewhat to use AI responsibly, down from 31% in 2025, and among those ages 18 to 29, trust fell from 30% to 20%, while those with no trust at all rose from 29% to 41%.
