Energy ETF VDE returns 93.6% over 12 months, beating S&P 500

VDE’s 12-month gain of 93.6% outpaced the S&P 500’s total return of 23.9% as energy stocks benefit from demand for oil, gas and related services.

Benzinga highlights the energy stocks sector as one of the most followed parts of the market, describing companies involved in producing, exploring, refining, or transporting fuels such as coal, oil, and gas.

The outlet also notes that the sector includes major names including Exxon Mobil, Marathon Petroleum, Chevron Corp, and ConocoPhillips, alongside firms providing drilling equipment, oil rigs, and energy-related services.

Benzinga points to the Vanguard Energy ETF, VDE, saying it has broadly outperformed the broader market with a 93.6% return over the past 12 months compared with 23.9% total returns for the S&P 500.

The piece frames energy stocks as split between nonrenewable and renewable categories, arguing global demand for energy and ongoing climate-related developments may support both areas over time.
