VA loan lenders highlight credit-score floors and rate guarantees

Pennymac says its VA purchase loans start at a 580 credit score, while Navy Federal touts below-median loan rates and a no-refi rate drop option that triggers after a $250 fee.

Yahoo Finance compiled a list of top VA mortgage lenders for August 2026, describing how VA loans can let eligible service members and veterans buy with no down payment, refinance, and tap home equity.

The outlet highlighted Pennymac as a major retail VA lender by loan volume, citing minimum credit-score requirements of 580 for VA purchase loans, 620 for VA cash-out refinance, and “no minimum” for VA IRRLs for current customers. It also noted Pennymac’s close-on-time guarantee, which includes a $2,500 lender credit if a loan does not close as scheduled, and said the lender offers credits tied to refinancing within three years if rates drop.

Yahoo Finance also pointed to Navy Federal Credit Union as a top VA choice, citing its performance in government data, including below-median mortgage rates and loan costs in 2024. The outlet described Navy Federal’s No-Refi Rate Drop feature, which allows borrowers to snag a lower interest rate six months or later after closing for a $250 fee without additional closing costs or changing loan terms, and a rate guarantee that matches a better rate from a competing lender or pays $1.
