Japan’s finance minister declines to comment on Monday FX intervention

She previously said Japan conducted coordinated yen buying with the United States on Friday, a move the US Treasury said helped curb disorderly yen swings.

Japan’s finance minister Satsuki Katayama said on Monday she would not comment on whether foreign exchange intervention took place that day, Reuters reported.

Earlier on Monday, Katayama said Japanese authorities conducted coordinated yen-buying intervention with the United States on Friday, and officials would not hesitate to carry out more FX intervention with Washington.

The US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Friday’s coordinated FX moves helped curb disorderly swings in the yen, adding that the Treasury will stay vigilant and maintain close communication with Japan’s Ministry of Finance and the Bank of Japan.

The report also noted that the Japanese yen attracted some buyers after the headlines, with USD/JPY down 0.6% on the day to 156.35 at the time of writing.
