Nvidia CEO says AI boom will boost jobs for plumbers and electricians
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said the skills needed to build chip and AI factories are already facing shortages, and he referenced a McKinsey estimate for tens of thousands of additional U.S. trades workers needed by 2030.
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, that the AI boom will help unlock six-figure job opportunities for skilled trades such as electricians, plumbers, and construction workers. He argued that building the physical infrastructure for chip, computer, and AI factories will require hands-on trade skills rather than only traditional white-collar paths.
Huang said demand for these construction-related roles is being strained by labor shortages, even though many positions can pay over $100,000 and do not necessarily require a college degree. In his remarks, he tied the job outlook to the construction and outfitting needs of large-scale AI facilities.
According to a McKinsey report cited in the Yahoo Finance write-up, the U.S. could need an additional 130,000 trained electricians, 240,000 construction laborers, and 150,000 construction supervisors between 2023 and 2030. Huang said people should be able to make a strong living without a PhD in computer science.
The article also notes Huang’s views contrast with concerns from other executives, including Ford CEO Jim Farley, who has warned AI could hollow out traditional white-collar entry points and pointed to an education system focused on four-year college degrees.
