Suze Orman warns working to 65 may fail if retirement is forced

A retirement confidence survey cited in the article says the median retirement age is 62, and up to 50% of Americans could be pushed into early retirement.

Suze Orman is warning that relying on the idea of working until 65 or later can be risky because many Americans may not get that option. Yahoo Finance notes Orman frames longer work as potentially helpful, but acknowledges that retirement can be forced by factors like restructuring, health diagnoses, or family circumstances.

The article points to findings from the Employee Benefit Research Institute (EBRI) 2026 Retirement Confidence Survey, which reports that while many people expect to retire at 65, the median retirement age is 62. It also says the risk of being forced into early retirement can be as high as 50% this year, even though most Americans do not expect it to happen to them.

According to EBRI’s Craig Copeland, it happens to one in two people, but most individuals assume they will be among those who can work longer. Yahoo Finance also highlights Orman and Copeland’s focus on preparing for scenarios involving Social Security benefits, including that monthly benefits increase when collecting is delayed from ages 67 through 70.
