Xbox Series X and Series S prices rise as chip costs climb

Microsoft says rising memory and storage chip costs are driving higher console prices, including a UK jump to £670 for Series X and £430 for Series S.

Microsoft has increased the prices of its Xbox consoles, citing higher costs for memory and storage chips. In the UK, the premium Xbox Series X with a disc drive will now cost £670, up from a previous £500 price.

Microsoft also raised the price of the baseline Xbox Series S to £430, roughly a 43% increase from its earlier £300. The company said it had hoped it would not need another price increase, but blamed the continuing rise in console storage and memory costs.

The price hikes extend beyond the UK. In the US, Microsoft raised its basic console prices by $100 to $499 and increased the cost of a higher-memory console by $150 to $749.

The BBC notes the broader trend across tech hardware, with rival Sony lifting PlayStation 5 prices by £90 in March, as well as other companies pointing to mounting hardware and storage component costs. The article also links the broader supply cost pressures to surging prices for memory, driven in part by demand from AI firms, and higher graphics card prices used in both consoles and gaming PCs.
