Cloudflare launches stablecoin wallets for AI agents to pay for APIs

The Wallets product is tied to Cloudflare’s x402 stablecoin payment rails, which have logged 160.6 million transactions worth $41.2 million across seven chains.

Cloudflare launched Cloudflare Wallets on Tuesday, designed to give AI agents a stablecoin balance and a human readable name when they pay for APIs, content and MCP tools on Cloudflare’s network. The company positions the launch as the buy side of agent payments, following its Monetization Gateway that lets sites charge agents per request in stablecoins using x402.

Cloudflare says x402 uses the protocol that repurposes the HTTP 402 status code for payments, and that Agent Economy has tracked 160.6 million x402 related transactions worth $41.2 million across seven chains. Cloudflare also cited activity averaging about 26 cents per transaction, while noting that totals can include tests, infrastructure traffic and repeated service calls depending on the facilitator lists used by trackers.

The company described two wallet types, Account Wallets and Virtual Wallets. Account Wallets belong to human owners and operators of a Cloudflare account, who fund them, delegate spending and withdraw, while Virtual Wallets run for individual agents tied to API keys and spend within limits set by the Account Wallet owner.

Cloudflare said Handle reservations open Tuesday, with funding, onramps and agent spending arriving in the coming months. It also outlined guardrails including an allowance, an allow list, and a maximum transaction size, with spending that trips thresholds routed for human review and confirmation.
