Abdul El-Sayed wins Michigan Democratic Senate nomination

The Democratic Party’s progressive wing notched a high-profile victory in Michigan after Abdul El-Sayed won the party’s US Senate nomination, a result that Reuters framed as a boost for the faction’s anti-establishment message ahead of November’s midterm elections.
El-Sayed, a doctor, built his campaign around healthcare and economic issues, and he called for an end to unconditional military aid to Israel. He also became the first progressive to win a statewide primary in a state that President Donald Trump carried in 2024.
The nomination race turned into an election-night cliffhanger between El-Sayed and US Congresswoman Haley Stevens, a moderate backed by Democratic leaders and pro-Israel groups. By Wednesday, Associated Press reported that with 99% of estimated votes counted, El-Sayed was ahead 48.5% to 47.5%.
Reuters reported that El-Sayed characterized the win as a test of democracy, saying the people’s democracy would be what his side points to going forward.
