Alphabet shares fall as Jeff Dean departs Google to launch a startup

Jeff Dean, Google’s chief scientist and an early company employee, is leaving to start his own firm, adding pressure as Alphabet competes in AI talent.

Alphabet’s shares fell after MarketWatch reported that Jeff Dean, Google’s chief scientist and one of the company’s first employees, is leaving Google to launch his own company.

The news comes after Dean’s exit was flagged as another senior AI leadership loss for Google, in a period when Alphabet is working to maintain its position in artificial intelligence.

The report notes Dean’s background at Google and frames the departure as a shift from Alphabet to a new outside venture.
