Ariel’s Small Cap Value Fund points to easing tensions in Q2 results

Ariel said its Small Cap Value Tax-Exempt Composite returned 17.2% gross and 17.0% net in Q2 2026, pacing the Russell 2000 Value on a net basis before ending the quarter with a cautious outlook for the second half.

Ariel Investments described a rebound in its Small Cap Value strategy during the second quarter of 2026, citing easing geopolitical tensions, lower oil prices, resilient earnings, and renewed strength in technology and AI-related stocks. In its Q2 2026 investor letter, the firm said the Small Cap Value Tax-Exempt Composite gained 17.19% gross and 17.04% net for the quarter.

Ariel said the fund’s performance matched the Russell 2000 Value Index, but trailed the broader Russell 2000's 21.49% return in the same period. The firm attributed results to strong stock selection, while also emphasizing disciplined, bottom-up research focused on durable businesses with strong balance sheets and sustainable competitive advantages.

Looking ahead to the second half, Ariel flagged potential volatility drivers including uneven global growth, geopolitical risks, persistent inflation, and elevated borrowing costs. The letter also spotlighted holdings such as The Brink’s Company, noting the company’s one-month return of 13.28% and that it had closed around $117.48 per share on July 31, 2026, with a market capitalization of about $4.878 billion.

Yahoo Finance also highlighted how Brink’s has been factoring into investor sentiment after a pending acquisition of NCR Atleos. The outlet said Brink’s earnings beat and reaffirmed full-year outlook, but the market reaction was negative tied to concerns about financial leverage and integration risk.
