Hong Kong police arrest woman in HK$4.3m crypto scam tied to rental listings
Police said an investment app on phones provided by the suspect contained preset fraudulent links that transferred control of victims' e-wallets to a scam syndicate.
Hong Kong police have arrested a 67-year-old woman over a virtual currency investment scam that targeted two property owners, according to SCMP Economy.
Investigators said the suspect posed as a prospective tenant, contacting landlords who were separately advertising a flat and a parking space for rent, and offered to pay in advance to build trust.
Police said the woman provided free mobile phones preloaded with a cryptocurrency investment app that was legitimate in itself, but had been preset with fraudulent links designed to secretly hand control of the victims' e-wallets to the scam group.
Authorities said the scheme resulted in HK$4.3 million in losses, equivalent to US$510,008.
