NHPC posts June-quarter profit jump as new capacity offsets weather hit
NHPC said consolidated EBITDA rose 31.0% year-on-year to ₹2,352 crore, but core generation fell about 7% excluding newly commissioned projects after a delayed monsoon.
NHPC Ltd delivered a better-than-expected June quarter for Q1FY27, with consolidated EBITDA increasing 31.0% year-on-year to ₹2,352 crore, helped by 0.25 GW of newly commissioned capacity and lower operating costs, according to LiveMint Markets. Revenue rose 18.0% to ₹3,808 crore, driven by higher power generation, but the company said the headline results masked pressure in its core business due to lower water levels in reservoirs after a delayed monsoon. Total generation increased 8.0% year-on-year to 9.5 billion units, while generation excluding newly commissioned projects declined by about 7.0%.
LiveMint Markets reported that revenue growth excluding new capacity was only 0.6%, highlighting how much of the quarter’s performance depended on the capacity additions. NHPC also said it expects a boost in the seasonally stronger second quarter from a revival of the monsoon, and from the resumption of operations at the Teesta-V unit in July, after it had been shut since October 2023 following damage from flash floods. The company pointed to improved execution, noting the 0.25 GW commissioning as its first major capacity addition in nearly seven years, and said 1.8 GW has been added since the start of FY26, with another 2.7 GW expected by the end of FY27. It also set FY27 capital expenditure at ₹15,000 crore, up from ₹13,700 crore in FY26.
