NYC inspectors checked 180 sites after office conversion mishap

After a high-profile office conversion mishap, New York City building inspectors conducted a sweep of 180 construction sites, according to the Department of Buildings, HousingWire reported.
The city cited 65 violations across 38 sites and issued 19 stop-work orders, while the DOB said it found no hazardous structural issues posing imminent danger to public safety, citing statements from DOB Commissioner Ahmed Tigani.
The sweep was aimed at firms tied to the conversion pipeline, and the findings were expected to ease broader scrutiny of office-to-residential projects in the wake of the MetroLoft incident at its 1,600-unit Manhattan project.
HousingWire also noted that the investigation into what caused columns to buckle remains open, with the city planning another round of sweeps and pointing to other Manhattan conversions still under stop-work orders.
