Proof of Play shuts Pirate Nation Studio, open-sources code under CC0

The PIRATE token was about $0.001285 on Wednesday, up 10% over 24 hours, as the studio said the Pirate Nation Foundation will keep supporting the token.

Proof of Play said it is shutting down the Pirate Nation Studio but releasing key game materials for outside use. The studio posted the Pirate Nation Unity app, the game smart contracts, and an internal agent workflow tool on GitHub, while publishing its Founder Pirates NFTs and Pirate Nation artwork, intellectual property, and logos under a CC0 license.

The company said the CC0 release waives copyright and places the work in the public domain. It also described a piratenation-art repository as an “Art archive for the Pirate Nation fully onchain game,” published under a CC0-1.0 license with folders for Combat Cards, founder NFT items, logos, and voxel game assets.

The outlet reported that developer AzFlin characterized the shutdown as Proof of Play “CC0’d all their artwork and 3d models,” pointing to assets including a giant squid model in the voxel files. Proof of Play added that the Pirate Nation Foundation is independent from the studio, will continue supporting PIRATE, and that the studio “will not be redeemable for anything.”

In token market data cited in the story, the PIRATE token traded at about $0.001285 on Wednesday, up 10% over 24 hours and down about 99.7% from its July 18, 2024, all-time high of $0.4757. Proof of Play also said its other game, Shiba Story Go!, was acquired by a third party and will continue operating independently.
