U.S. office visits rise 6% year-over-year in first half of 2026

Office attendance is still 31.2% below 2019 levels nationwide, and the report shows the gap is narrowing at a faster pace than in the same period of 2025.

U.S. office attendance increased in the first half of 2026, with nationwide office visits rising 6.0% year-over-year, according to data from foot-traffic tracker Placer.ai cited by Commercial Observer.

The six-month period also marked acceleration from the 1.9% annual uptick seen during the same period of 2025, but recovery remains incomplete. Placer’s August office market report puts office visits 31.2% below 2019 levels.

Attendance diverged widely across markets, the report said. Miami was closer to baseline with first-half attendance 11.5% below 2019, while Denver remained more than 40% below.

Los Angeles and San Francisco recorded the largest year-over-year gains, with annual visitation upticks of 13.0% and 10.9% respectively, as hybrid work patterns persist unevenly, including differences in how often Fridays account for weekday visits. Commercial Observer notes the trend is unlikely to be a full return to pre-pandemic density, with companies continuing to adjust office attendance expectations into 2026.
