Warren asks Commerce about UAE access to AI chips after Trump crypto ties

The letter follows Commerce’s shift of the UAE to Country Group A:5, which expands license-free access to advanced chips and includes a plan to “favorably review” certain chip and server license applications tied to MGX.

Senator Elizabeth Warren has reportedly written to the US Commerce Department seeking answers about how the administration is treating the United Arab Emirates after UAE-linked investments tied to President Donald Trump’s family-backed cryptocurrency venture, World Liberty Financial, according to Cointelegraph citing CNBC.

Warren asked Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick to explain why the US granted the UAE greater access to AI chips after two investments connected to the Trump-linked crypto business, Cointelegraph reported. An Abu Dhabi entity backed by Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed Al Nahyan made a reported $500 million investment in World Liberty Financial in January.

Cointelegraph added that another UAE-linked company settled a reported $2 billion investment in crypto exchange Binance using World Liberty’s USD1 stablecoin.

The inquiry comes after Commerce changed the UAE’s categorization to Country Group A:5, expanding access to license-free exports that include advanced chips, and said it would “favorably review” license applications involving chips and servers to MGX, the UAE entity associated with the Binance investment. Cointelegraph also noted the probe is part of ongoing efforts by Democratic lawmakers to examine potential influence from foreign crypto investments.
